The first Vande Bharat offered a specific proposition: travel from New Delhi to Varanasi in eight scheduled hours, in an air-conditioned train designed and built at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai. When Narendra Modi inaugurated it on 15 February 2019, the achievement was a working train entering service, backed by the engineers, suppliers and railway institution that had produced it. [1] [2]
The original 16-coach train included two executive-class coaches. Automatic doors, passenger-information displays and regenerative braking accompanied the new trainset design. The launch record credited ICF with design, modelling, manufacture and integration of equipment supplied by multiple firms. These were concrete changes in the product Indian Railways could offer. [1]
Beyond the inaugural service
By July 2026, the railway ministry listed 81 pairs of Vande Bharat chair-car services across the network. That is 162 directional services, not 162 separate routes or necessarily 162 physical trainsets. The distinction is easy to lose when the same headline number is described simply as “trains.” [2]
The expansion gives the programme a significance beyond its first departure. A domestically developed train had become a repeated procurement and operating choice. Political backing helped move that programme forward; the factory and its suppliers did the manufacturing, while railway zones put the services into operation.
The speed printed on the specification
A train’s maximum speed does not tell a passenger how long the journey will take. In a July 2025 parliamentary reply, the ministry gave Vande Bharat a design speed of 180 km/h and maximum operating speed of 160 km/h. It also explained that average speed depends on track geometry, intermediate stops and maintenance work. [3]
Consequently, neither number can be substituted for the average speed of a Delhi–Varanasi journey, or any other service. The eight-hour figure announced in 2019 was a schedule, not a published audit of punctuality. Faster rolling stock and the infrastructure that permits it to run faster are related investments, with separate constraints. [1] [3]
A premium passenger service
The improved product also carried a premium. In March 2023, the ministry told Parliament that its basic AC chair-car fare was 1.4 times the corresponding Shatabdi basic fare; the executive-class multiplier was 1.3. Reservation charges, catering and applicable taxes were additional. Those ratios describe the policy reported then, not the price of a ticket today. [4]
For travellers, the useful comparison therefore remains the actual departure and arrival times, available seats and total fare for the journey they need. The engineering accomplishment is visible in the train. Its everyday value is measured between the two stations on the ticket.
